intervention

The project seeks to preserve and develop the seaside site of the E1027 villa by Eileen Gray, and the “Cabanon”, Mediterranean retreat of LeCorbusier, through research and tourist facilities.

The aim of the project is to allow for total immersion in the site and its inherent qualities, such as its climate, its topography, and its relation to the sea, while using the tension between private (research) and public (tourism), to intensify moments of friction and interaction.

The context is punctuated by small constructions linked by terraces and traditional stairs. The project stems from this type of distribution and offers a program fragmented into different volumes : some are sculpted in the ground; while others are added onto them like parasites. Hence, there are two types of constructions : the mineral socle, and the wooden pavilion, which intertwine with a landscape of local vegetation and outdoor spaces.

The E1027 villa is converted into a bookshop, located at the end of the visitor’s promenade. The walls are kept intact, and are protected by glass: the villa is converted into a self-museum, its walls become artwork that one contemplates without reaching. The camping units are reinstated to receive researchers and official guests. The Etoile de mer remains a snack-bar, close to the main attractions : LeCorbusier’s cabanon and the E1027.
